2026-27 King's College London Ethnic Minority in STEM Scholarship

The Ethnic Minority in STEM Scholarship is funded by the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences as part of our commitment to increasing the representation of those with an ethnic minority* background who are studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) subjects.

The scholarship is designed to offer financial assistance to an outstanding candidate throughout their undergraduate programme (for a maximum of three years of study) and to introduce them to various initiatives and activities taking place across the university in response to the issue of underrepresentation.

The Faculty expects scholarship holders to contribute to these initiatives and be an active participant in such events and activities. Please note that repeat years on interrupted study periods will not be funded.

Benefits

• One successful applicant will receive £1,000 per year that they are enrolled on an undergraduate programme in the Faculty, for a maximum of three years of study.
• Please note that repeat years or interrupted study periods will not be funded. 
• Awards will be paid in 3 termly instalments.

Requirements

Applications are open to Home fee status students who meet the eligibility criteria listed below.

To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, applicants must:

• be an applicant from an ethnic minority* background in the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences
• hold an offer of a place at King's for entry in September 2026
• be starting your first undergraduate degree programme in September 2026
• be undertaking an undergraduate programme in the Departments of Chemistry, Engineering, Informatics, Mathematics or Physics, or undertaking the Natural Science programme
• have home fee status
• have been means-tested with a final assessed household income of £42,875 or less**

* Applicants should identify as being Asian or Asian British, Black, Black British, Caribbean or African, Mixed, Gypsy Traveller or Latin American. Our ethnicity categories are based on HESA requirements and so we understand that some people may not identify with them.

** by Student Finance England/Northern Ireland/Wales/SAAS. Students do not have to actively provide consent for their household income information to be shared with King's College London, and it will only be withheld if the student or their sponsor has actively chosen to withdraw their consent.

Award conditions

As an Ethnic Minority in STEM Scholarship holder we will ask that you to do the following during your studies:

• Write a piece for the Faculty website to show how you have been involved and what you have done.

We hope that Scholarship holders will:

• Become a Race Equality Champion
• Support and attend Faculty Open Days and public engagement events
• Assist in the design and promotion of cross-faculty activities in support of inclusive education initiatives and other awareness raising events
• Be actively involved in one-two activities each year, either as a member of a Department or Faculty E&D Committee, taking part in an event, or arranging your own.
