If you cannot remember your unique access code, you can use the online application system to recover it using a process that works via the mobile phone number you registered with.
If you haven’t submitted your application yet and are unable to log in, we recommend starting a new application. As we’re a small team, this is the quickest and most efficient option, faster than requesting a manual account reset.
If you have followed our recommendation to prepare your essay answers outside of the system and then paste them into the application form, completing a new application from the beginning should be a straight-forward process.
If you have been invited to interview and can’t login, please email us by replying directly to your interview invitation. It may take a number of working days to complete your manual reset request.
Please note that applicants can only access their application by logging into the online application system during the open application window. Once the application window is closed, it is not possible to access the online application system unless you are invited to interview.

If you do have difficulties logging into your saved application during the final week of the application period and are having trouble resetting your unique access code via the self-service process, we recommend that you re-start your application from the beginning, rather than requesting a manual reset.
If you have followed our recommendation to prepare your essay answers outside of the system and then paste them into the application form, completing a new application from the beginning should be a straight-forward process.

If after receiving your invoice, you are unclear about how to make the payment, you should contact the university directly.
My university is asking me to pay a tuition fee deposit, what should I do?
Some universities require a tuition fee deposit either because you have deferred your place from the previous year or to secure your unconditional offer. Chevening will not pay this deposit.
In some cases, the university may be able to postpone payment of the deposit if they are aware that you are waiting for your Chevening Award to be confirmed, or waive your deposit upon receipt of your final award letter. However, this is at the discretion of each university.
Chevening will pay your tuition fees directly to your university after you have arrived in the UK, so if you paid a deposit, it will show as credit on your tuition fee account. For example, if the start date of your course is 14 September, your September stipend will be calculated according to the period 14-30 September. If, in this scenario, you arrive in the UK on September 10, you will receive your stipend when you arrive, but it will be calculated as above.
Can Diversity assist with personal travel arrangements?
Yes, but this will be at your own cost.

You can submit your application without a valid passport. However, you will be required to bring a valid passport or official photo identification to your interview at the British embassy or high commission if selected.
Can I travel outside of the UK whilst on my Chevening Award?
As a Chevening Scholar we want you to experience as much of the UK and its culture as possible. Therefore during the tenure of your scholarship, you are permitted to travel outside of the UK for a maximum of 30 days. Travel outside of the UK requires prior consent, so you should notify your programme officer at least two weeks in advance of any travel. Please refer to your final award letter for confirmation of your scholarship tenure dates.
If you arrive later in the academic year, due to starting your studies remotely at home, this will be adjusted proportionally. For example, if you spend two thirds of the academic year in the UK, you will be allowed 20 days outside the UK.
Depending on where you travel to, it may be necessary for you to apply for an additional visa, for example the Schengen visa. It is your responsibility to check if you require a visa before travelling. If you have any concerns about travelling outside of the UK while on award, you can contact your programme officer or the welfare and immigration team.
I have two passports, which one should I use when travelling to the UK?
Ideally you should use the passport from the country for which you have been awarded the scholarship. However, you should use the passport which you have used for your CAS and to apply for your visa. You should not use a diplomatic or government official passport to travel to the UK because your Chevening Scholarship is not considered to be an official posting.
What happens if I lose my cash card?
A replacement card will be provided. However, there will be a fee to issue a new cash card and for the transfer of funds. This fee will be applied to you and deducted from the amount transferred on your replacement card.
Please advise your programme officer or the fellowships team as soon as possible if your card is lost or stolen so that it can be suspended.
What should I do if my passport is close to expiring?
Your passport should ideally be valid for the entirety of your award.
We can accept your passport if it is valid until November after your course starts. f However, you will need to renew your passport while you are in the UK. This can take some time and is at your own risk.
If you do renew your passport in the UK, please ensure you update your UKVI account to that your new passport is linked with your eVisa. You should also your university, as your Student visa sponsor, with a copy of your new passport.

If you wish to bring your dependents to the UK please contact your university’s international office for further advice about their visas. The UKCISA website also has further information which may be useful.
You can inform our travel provider of others who will be flying with you. They will attempt to find seats for all of you, but if unsuccessful, they will have to book their own tickets on a different flight. Please note that the Chevening Secretariat will not cover any costs associated with your dependents’ travel.

How are partnership awards administered?
All Chevening Scholarships, including those co-funded with partners, are fully administered by the Chevening Secretariat. The Secretariat makes payments to scholars (e.g. monthly stipends, flight costs and arrival allowances) and invoices the partner for its contribution to the partnership. This ensures the partnership award scholars receive the same support as other Chevening Scholars so that they identify with the Chevening Programme, and are encouraged to connect with other Chevening Scholars and the wider alumni network.
How are partnerships funded?
There are a variety of funding models for partnership awards.
Partner universities most commonly offer a full tuition fee waiver with the FCDO covering allowances, stipend, travel, engagement and enrichment programme as well as all other administration costs.
For private sector organisations, contributions often take the form of a fixed sum of either a flat rate or a percentage of the estimated total of an award.
Total costs vary depending on scholars’ course and university choice, but generally costs are split 50/50. The Chevening Secretariat invoices a partner for their contribution before the end of November each year for the agreed amount. University partners waive the tuition fees, with no invoice required.
Can a partnership be arranged for short courses, distance learning or PhDs?
In general, the Chevening Scholarship programme provides awards for one-year taught Master’s level degree courses. A very small number of short courses are offered, but on an exceptional basis only. Distance learning scholarships and PhDs are not eligible for funding under a Chevening Scholarship.
How are Chevening Scholars selected?
All Chevening applications undergo a rigorous review.
Applications are first screened using our plagiarism tool, and then sifted and checked against our eligibility criteria.
They are then individually reviewed by independent reading committees who score each application against FCDO, Chevening, and regional objectives, and the potential of the candidate to meet those objectives.

Candidates are scored and a longlist is presented to the local British Embassy or High Commission, who interview and select final candidates.
What are the benefits of a Chevening Partner Award (as opposed to a standard Chevening Award)?
Chevening Partnerships enable scholars and partners to establish deeper and more enduring connections with each other. As the recipient of a partnership award, you will stand to benefit from unique networking opportunities and other bespoke enrichment events offered by Chevening’s partners. Both awards provide scholars with the same experience in the UK and the same level of funding.
What is the difference between a standard Chevening Award and a Chevening Partner Award?
Both awards provide scholars with the same experience in the UK and the same level of funding. To be selected for a university partner award, you must select that university as your first choice. For corporate partner awards, you may need to be studying a certain course or working in a certain field to be eligible for that award. You can find more details in the ‘Partners’ section toward the bottom of your country page.

How can I find out if my qualification makes me eligible for a Chevening Award?
To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship, you should have an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at a UK university. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree in the UK. Please contact individual universities to check if your qualification meets their entry requirements.

Yes, you can apply to Chevening if you already have a master’s degree. Please check with your preferred universities to ensure you meet the other entry requirements for your chosen courses. Fellowship programmes may have additional requirements which you should check on the relevant programme page.
I completed an undergraduate degree in the UK, can I still apply to the programme and return to study for a master’s course?
Yes, you can. However, if you have already received financial benefit from the UK government, you cannot apply for a Chevening Award.
Can I apply for a Chevening Award in the final year of my undergraduate degree?
No. Chevening Awards are aimed at graduates who have already acquired some work experience. You must have already graduated from your degree at the time of application.
Where can I go for help if I need specialist housing advice?
If your Students’ Union or university doesn’t provide any housing advice then there are other agencies that may be able to help. The housing charity Shelter provides useful information as well face to face and telephone advice.
The Citizens Advice Bureau will also be able to offer further advice on your housing issue and you can find out how to contact them here.
If you are studying in Leeds, Bradford, or Nottingham then Unipol offers very good housing advice and listings.
If you are studying at one of the University of London institutions then you can access the excellent University of London Housing Service which provides housing advice and listings.
Is my accommodation and property covered by the Chevening Secretariat’s insurance?
No. Your Chevening Scholarship does not include any insurance. We recommend taking out possessions insurance to protect your belongings from theft, fire, loss, or accidental damage while you are staying in the UK. Some university accommodation contracts do include possessions insurance, but you should carefully check exactly what is and is not included. Your Students’ Union may be able to recommend insurance to claim.
My landlord requires me to pay my rent in instalments, can you help with this?
We provide you with a monthly living allowance which you can use to meet your costs of living, including your rent. However, some university and private residences will require payment of rent in three or four instalments. You should always check to see if your accommodation provider will accept monthly payments – we recommend that you send your Final Award Letter as evidence of the stipends you will receive if your Chevening application is successful.
My landlord/accommodation provider wants me to pay a deposit now, what can I do?
You are responsible for paying any accommodation deposits yourself; The Chevening Secretariat will not be able to make any payments directly to your landlord or accommodation provider.
If you are required to pay a deposit, you should ask your landlord if you can delay payment of it until you arrive in the UK. You can provide a copy of your Final Award Letter (FAL) to your landlord to show that you will be in receipt of funding when you arrive in the UK.
Please remember that if you pay your deposit on your cash card, you will receive the deposit back on this card at the end of the year so it is important that you keep it safe.
Unfortunately, there are several scams that rogue landlords use to try and extort money from international students. If you are looking at private housing then please seek advice from your university housing service. This page from the UK housing charity Shelter also offers advice.
How much funding will I receive for my accommodation?
Your Conditional Award Letter will indicate your monthly stipend rate. Your stipend is intended to cover reasonable living costs in the UK while you are studying full time and is calculated to cover your basic expenses only. These include such expenses as accommodation, meals, personal expenses, phone bill, daily travel, and any required course resources. You should also use your stipend to cover the cost of NHS charges for prescriptions, dental treatment, and opticians. We recommend that you budget your finances effectively and choose the right accommodation that you can afford. You may wish to consider using the Student Budget Calculator which is an online tool to help you with your budgeting. Once your award is confirmed your Final Award Letter will confirm your monthly stipend rate and any other allowances you are eligible to receive.
When should I start looking at accommodation options?
There is no harm in starting your research into accommodation options as early as possible. If your university has a housing advice service you can start by contacting them. Ideally, you should not sign any housing contract until you have seen the accommodation you are signing for. Try to do as much research as possible before committing to any particular accommodation, as it is very difficult to cancel an accommodation contract and move somewhere else. Doing so may mean that you lose money. Be aware of your university’s deadline for applying for accommodation and understand the terms and conditions regarding reserving accommodation.
Can you recommend accommodation in the UK for me?
The first thing you may want to do is ask your university about the accommodation they can offer. You should make sure you are aware of any application deadlines as university accommodation is very popular and can get booked up quickly. You don’t have to live in university accommodation as there are lots of private accommodation options available to you too.
The Secretariat is unable to find accommodation for you or make recommendations, but we strongly advise you to look into all available options and give careful thought to how much you wish to spend and how far you’re willing to travel to university each day, before committing to an accommodation contract. Your university may have a housing advice service and you should approach them for advice on both university and private accommodation in the local area. Some universities and local councils run their own accreditation schemes for private housing ensuring that the accommodation meets a minimum standard and that tenants are treated fairly.
Be wary of any scams that rogue landlords use to try and extort money from international students. Be cautious of sending any money to someone that you don’t know, haven’t met, and for any property you have not had a chance to view yourself. Using local letting agents is one way to find accommodation and checking to see if they are accredited with Propertymark or Safeagent will give you a little bit more protection and assurance. If you are looking at private housing then please seek advice from your university housing service or Students’ Union. For independent housing advice, the UK housing charity Shelter also offers advice.
Can the Chevening Secretariat help me find somewhere to live?
The Chevening Secretariat is limited in the assistance we can provide for accommodation, and encourage you to contact your host institution’s accommodation office for advice about finding accommodation before coming to the UK.
Is accommodation included in my fellowship?
This will be dependent on your fellowship and will be stated in your final award letter. Where accommodation is pre-arranged as part of your award, you will receive a reduced living allowance. If accommodation is not pre-arranged as part of your award, your monthly living allowance will be calculated to include accommodation costs.
Can Chevening act as my guarantor?
Chevening is not able to act as a guarantor under any circumstances. A guarantor is a third-party individual or organisation who agrees to be responsible for paying your rent if you fail to do so. University accommodation providers will not generally ask for a guarantor, but some private landlords will require one as a condition of the contract.
Who pays for my accommodation?
Scholars are responsible for finding, and paying for, their own accommodation. Chevening is not able to pay for your accommodation on your behalf. We would recommend that you do not pay anything for your accommodation until you have viewed the property and made sure you are happy with it.
My landlord is asking me to confirm my payment method, how should I pay?
It is your decision how you pay your rent. We would advise direct debit or bank transfer to prevent you from withdrawing and carrying large amount of cash around. You should organise payment with your accommodation provider.
Do I need to get an unconditional offer from each university listed in my application?
No, you only need one unconditional offer to be eligible to receive a Chevening Scholarship.
I recently attended an interview. Do I wait to hear whether I passed this step before I approach my three preferred universities?
No. Applicants must apply to the three university courses as early as possible and upload any unconditional offers they receive to the online application system.
I’ve selected my three course choices on the Chevening application. Does this mean that my applications have also been submitted to the universities?
No. You will need to apply directly to each of your chosen universities for your selected course(s).
I deferred my Chevening Scholarship last year and would now like to change my chosen course. Can I?
You must contact your local British embassy or high commission to discuss this directly. It is at their discretion to agree alternative courses that may better reflect your new career focus.
I applied to my preferred universities but I have not received any response. Can Chevening speak to the universities on my behalf?
No, you must contact the universities directly. It is your responsibility to ensure you receive an unconditional offer by the deadline.
If I don’t receive an offer from the three choices I listed on the application form, can I have additional choices?
No. If you do not get an offer from any of the courses confirmed at your interview, you will not be eligible for a Chevening Award. Please carefully consider your course choices before committing to them.
Can I apply for a Chevening Scholarship to study a distance learning course delivered by a UK university?
No, Chevening Scholarships are available for study in the UK only. It is also not an option for you to start your studies in your home country through distance learning and then to come to the UK to complete the course later in the academic year.
Due to the exceptional circumstances presented by COVID-19, scholars starting their courses in the 2020 academic year may be allowed to start their taught master’s degree courses through distance learning measures in situations where there are travel restrictions into the UK only.
