Benefits

The studentship is funded for 3 years which includes tuition fees and a stipend at the UKRI rate.

Requirements

• This award is open to UK and overseas students.
• Applicants should hold an upper second-class undergraduate degree and a masters degree obtained from a UK university or an overseas qualification of equivalent standard. In exceptional cases other qualifications and experience may be considered and all applications will be assessed on their merit.
• To study at King's, if English is not your first language, it is essential that you can communicate in English effectively in an academic environment. You are usually required to provide certification of your competence in English before starting your studies. Selection Process

All eligible applicants for the NMPC scholarship funding will be shortlisted based an assessment of their research proposals and personal statements and, if selected, will be interviewed by their potential PhD supervisors and a member of the PGR team.

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria during selection:

• Originality and Scientific Merit of the Project      
• Methodology/ Achievability    
• Relevance to Faculty Research 
• Strength/Academic Merit of the applicant    
• Strength of Personal Statement     
• Strength of Support from Referees

How To Apply

Please read the steps below carefully. All of the steps outlined are required in order for an application to be eligible for consideration for Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care studentship funding.

Step 1: Identify Potential Supervisors (Before Any Formal Application).

Before submitting a formal application, applicants are expected to:

• Identify 2–3 potential PhD supervisors from the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care .
• Ensure that at least one proposed supervisor is a member of our faculty.

Step 2: Prepare your PhD Research Proposal and CV

Your research proposal must be clearly structured as follows:

Abstract (maximum 4,000 characters)

A concise summary of your proposed research.

Aim and Objectives (up to 150 words)

State your research question in clear, non-technical language. Include primary hypotheses, where appropriate.

Essential Background (up to 500 words)

Outline existing research relevant to your topic and clearly explain how your project addresses a gap in current knowledge or evidence.

Proposed Plan of Work (up to 1,000 words)

Describe:

• The overall study design (e.g. qualitative, mixed methods, ethnography, participatory action research, survey development)
• Key methods and, where relevant, statistical approaches
• How the proposed methods will address the research aims

A timeline or Gantt chart is strongly recommended.

References

Include all cited sources.

Step 3: Email [email protected]

You must then email the Senior Programmes Officer (PGR) at: [email protected]

Your email must include all of the following:

• Names of 2–3 NMPC academic staff you would like to be considered as supervisors

• A copy of your Curriculum Vitae

• A copy of your Personal Statement (max 1000 words)

• A copy of your PhD research proposal (see required structure above)

If your email is missing any of this three requirements, your submissions will not progress to the next stage.

The Senior Programmes Officer (PGR) will:

• Contact your named potential supervisors to check their availability and willingness to supervise your project
• If your named supervisors are unavailable, identify alternative suitable supervisors within the faculty

Applicants may proceed to a formal application only where they have the support of a first (primary) supervisor from the faculty.

Deadline for circulation to supervisors:
To ensure applications can be circulated to potential supervisors, all required documents (names of 2–3 proposed supervisors, CV, and research proposal) must be submitted to [email protected] by Monday 16th March at 23:59 (midnight).

Applicants who meet this internal circulation deadline and receive supervisor support may still submit their formal King’s Apply application and NMPC studentship MS Form up to the advertised studentship deadline (31st March 2026).

Step 4: Submit a Formal Application via King’s Apply (Mandatory)

If a potential supervisor agrees that you should proceed:

• You must submit a full formal application through the King’s Apply online application system (https://apply.kcl.ac.uk/) using the Grant Code 2026-NMPC and upload your Research Proposal and Personal Statement.

Submission of a full formal application via the King’s Apply online application system is required. Applications that are not submitted through King’s Apply cannot be considered for the studentship.

Step 5: Complete the NMPC Studentship MS Form (Mandatory)

After submitting your application in King’s Apply:

• You must also complete the NMPC studentship MS Form (Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care PhD Studentship Application Form – Fill out form)

This step is essential.

Applications will not be considered for NMPC studentship funding unless all three of the following conditions have been met:

1. A completed formal application via King’s Apply (using the Funding code 2026-NMPC), and
2. A completed NMPC studentship MS Form, and
3. Have the support of a first supervisor within the NMPC faculty

Applications that do not meet all of the three above requirements cannot be considered for NMPC studentship funding
