The University of Essex is offering seven PhD research Scholarships students to participate in one of the Sustainable Transitions DTP projects. This project focuses on Governance, Ecological Management and Society.

Benefits

Successful applicants will receive a full PhD scholarship for up to a maximum of four years of study, including:

• Home or Overseas tuition fee waiver. 
• Living costs stipend at the UK Research and Innovation recommended level per year. The stipend rate for 2025-26 is £20,780. The stipend for 2026-27 is to be confirmed.
• A research allowance of £10,000 (in total) to be spent on authorised research costs for example supplies and equipment, field work etc

Selection Process

• Applicants shortlisted for interview will be informed by 29 April 2026.
• Two rounds of interviews will take place from 7 May and 9 June 2026.
• Outcomes for interviewed applicants will be communicated by 26 June 2026.

How To Apply

You should apply separately for the scholarship and the PhD course applicable to the project that you are applying for.

To apply for the scholarship:

Please complete the application form (.docx) and email it to [email protected] by 11:59 PM on Monday 13 April 2026 and attach a 3 page (max) curriculum vitae including educational and academic /professional / working experience 

To apply for the PhD course:

Please complete the online course application. For more information see PhD application information.

On the Course page of the application form, there is a section titled ‘Proposed research topic or area of research *’. In the adjacent box please note that you are applying for a Sustainable Transitions scholarship and provide the title of the project. 

On the same page, there is a section that states ‘If you have contacted a potential supervisor to discuss your application or research proposal, please provide the person's full name’. In the adjacent box please state the name of the primary discipline supervisor for the project.
