Benefits

All studentships are fully funded for 4 years. They provide:

  • 4 years fees (Home rate) (Note: International students will receive a UCL award to cover the home/international fee difference).
  • Maintenance stipend at UELA enhanced rate, rises each year (For 2026/27, the total stipend is expected to be £26,022, i.e. £1,500 above the UKRI London-weighted rate of £24,522).
  • Research Training Support Grant (RTSG). This is to cover additional costs of training e.g. courses, project costs, conferences, travel.
  • Collaborative projects might include an additional partner stipend enhancement and additional partner RTSG on top of the UELA stipend enhancement and UELA RTSG.

Students will be registered for 4 years and are expected to submit their thesis within the 4 year funded period. The project should be designed and supervised to facilitate this.

For part time students the stipend and duration will be adjusted pro-rata (e.g. a 50% FTE student will receive 50% of stipend for up to 8 years).

Requirements

You must fulfil the academic entry requirements for UCL.

You must fulfil any additional academic entry requirements for the department you will be hosted by.

For the purposes of UKRI/EPSRC studentship funding, applicants are treated as having either ‘Home’ or ‘International’ eligibility.

These studentships are open to those with Home and International fee status (including EU). However, the number of students with International fee status which can be recruited is capped according to the EPSRC terms and conditions so competition for International places is particularly strong. We particularly welcome applications from Home students.

You are required to self-assess your fee status at the application stage.

Whether you are classified as Home or International depends on a number of factors, including your nationality, immigration status and where you have been ordinarily resident during the relevant period before the start of your programme.

UK nationals, Irish nationals, individuals with settled status or indefinite leave to remain or enter, and some individuals with pre-settled status may qualify for Home status, subject to the relevant eligibility and residency requirements. Other categories of applicant may also qualify for Home status under the applicable fee-status regulations.

Applicants should not rely on this summary to determine their fee status. If you are offered a studentship, your fee status will be formally assessed by UCL Admissions. The outcome of that assessment will determine whether you are treated as a Home or International student for the purposes of the studentship.

UELA reserves the right to withdraw any offers if the candidates’ fee status does not match the information provided at the application stage.
