Subscribe for Scholarship Alert.

Smartphones, laptops and the TV in your home - they all rely on technology that was made possible by research at the University of Hull. Fifty years ago, Professor George W Gray patented the liquid crystal molecule 5CB that made LCDs and flat screens viable. His work is arguably one of the most significant scientific breakthroughs of the modern era. To celebrate this landmark discovery, the University of Hull has created a commemorative scholarship to encourage more international students to study chemistry and, hopefully, follow in Professor Gray’s footsteps.

Fifty years ago, the molecules that made LCDs and flat screens possible were invented by Chemists at the University of Hull. To celebrate this world changing invention we are offering up to 50 international scholarships over the next 3 years to study chemistry with us. As a chemistry student at Hull you will:

  • Study in a region with one of the highest concentrations of chemical industry in the UK - including BP, Total, Reckitt, Philips 66, Croda, and Smith & Nephew - and get the chance to visit some of these world-leading businesses as part of your course.
  • Enjoy excellent employment prospects - 94% of our students go on to work and/ or study within 15 months after the course.
  • Study on course with 100% student satisfaction for first degree Chemistry students. (Joint top in the UK)
