University of Manchester Fully Funded PhD in Materials (Heat transfer in 2D laminates) 2026

Subscribe for Scholarship Alert!

The proposed project systematically explores heat transfer mechanisms in graphene laminates, which are intricate, random 2D material networks. It builds on our prior research into electrical transport in such networks and work done on material quality improvement. The main objective of the project is to identify the physical and chemical factors influencing heat exchange in randomly stacked 2D crystals and to determine how manipulating these factors can boost the overall thermal conductivity of the laminate.

Throughout this project, you will learn various electrical, thermal, and optical characterisation techniques essential for studying heat transport in 2D and 3D crystals. You will also acquire skills in material synthesis and micromachining necessary for preparing experimental samples. Besides practical skills, you will deepen your understanding of materials physics and explore the theoretical aspects of thermal transport in nanoscale systems.
