The Tamar Engineering Project at the University of Plymouth is a transformative initiative designed to support academically talented students pursuing engineering or engineering-related degrees who face personal or socioeconomic barriers to higher education. Delivered in collaboration with industry partners, the project offers financial support, one-to-one industry mentoring, and access to real-world professional development, helping students succeed both academically and in their future careers.
To be eligible for the Tamar Engineering Project, applicants must:
Hold or be applying for a place on an approved engineering or engineering-related undergraduate course at the University of Plymouth
Demonstrate strong academic potential (e.g. high A-level achievement or equivalent)
Come from a background or personal circumstance that presents a barrier to higher education, such as:
Low household income (less than £25,000/year, as assessed by Student Finance)
Looked-after young person (currently or formerly in foster care / care leaver)
Young carer (providing unpaid care for a relative or friend due to illness, disability, mental health, or addiction)
Estranged from parents (no contact with both biological or adoptive parents for 12 months or more)
Living in a TUNDRA area (a postcode with low progression to higher education — check eligibility using the Contextual Offer postcode tool)
