Bangor University PhD Studentship in Health Sciences 2026

The PhD will evaluate combinations of statistical methods for handling missing data and other common challenges in trial-based economic evaluations. The programme of work will include:

  • A systematic review of existing methods and their recommended use.
  • Simulation-based assessment of combinations of approaches across different sample sizes, effect sizes, and data-generating mechanisms.
  • Application of promising approaches to real-world clinical trial datasets.
  • Development of guidance for analysts and decision-makers, including implications for uncertainty analysis (e.g., value of information [VOI] estimation).

Benefits

Studentships are funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) for 3 years. Funding will cover tuition fees at the UK rate only, a Research Training and Support Grant (RTSG) and stipend. Bangor University aim to support the most outstanding applicants from outside the UK and are able to offer a limited number of bursaries that will enable full studentships to be awarded to international applicants. These full studentships will only be awarded to exceptional quality candidates, due to the competitive nature of this scheme.

Requirements

This funded PhD project is open to applicants from all regions.

The candidate will be part of a vibrant postgraduate research community within the North Wales Medical School. The lead supervisor, Dr Will Hardy, will provide overall direction to the candidate, offering mentorship in conceptual contexts. Dr Zoë Hoare, Director and Principal Statistician at North Wales Organisation for Randomised Trials in Health (& Social Care) (NWORTH), will contribute specialised knowledge and guidance in this area. Professor Dyfrig Hughes, who has extensive experience working on numerous NIHR-funded trials, will provide strategic input as well as clinical and pharmacological expertise.

Together, the team will ensure the candidate receives methodological training, access to relevant datasets, and support in dissemination to both academic and policy audiences.
