GCU PhD in Predicting the Risk of Opioid Use Disorder in Non-Cancer Chronic Pain 2025

This fully funded PhD studentship, co-sponsored by the Academy of Medical Sciences and Glasgow Caledonian University, offers an exciting opportunity to explore the risk factors and prediction models for opioid use disorder (OUD) in Scotland. The project focuses on individuals prescribed opioids for non-cancer chronic pain and aims to develop a clinical risk prediction tool using electronic health records and data science methods.

Benefits

  • Annual stipend of £20,780 (UKRI rate) starting 1st October 2025

Requirements

  • Applicants should have a first or upper second-class honours degree in Psychology, Public Health, Medical Science or a related discipline (e.g., Behavioural Science; Health Sciences).
  • An MSc (merit or distinction) in a relevant subject would also be advantageous.
  • Experience with statistical methods and interest in addiction, are essential
  • Due to the nature of the funding, this studentship is open to UK/Republic of Ireland applicants only.

Selection Process

Selection is based on:

  • Academic excellence
  • Research interest in addiction sciences, epidemiology, or statistical modelling
  • Strength of personal statement (max 1 A4 page)
  • Understanding of electronic health records and data science is a plus
