The School of Economics is pleased to offer the Minto Scholarship, with a bequest from the estate of Mr Brian Dickinson, for PhD research in economics.

Benefits

The scholarship provides a stipend at UKRI rates (this is updated each academic year; for 2025/2026 this was £20,780), paid monthly, and a full fee waiver, and is awarded for four years subject to satisfactory academic progression. The School's PhD programme has a duration of four years; applicants should be advised that no funding is provided during the writing-up period.

Requirements

The Minto scholarship is available to students who are residents of the following countries:

  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Canada
  • Finland
  • Norway
  • Sweden
  • Denmark

Applicants for the scholarship must have applied for first-year entry to the School's PhD programme. Information on the application process can be found on the Degree Finder at the following link: PhD with Integrated Study in Economics

Selection Process

  • All scholarships will be awarded on academic merit. 
  • To obtain admission to the PhD programme, applicants must have a distinction in a Masters degree equivalent to the Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics MSc, taught at Edinburgh (more information on this is available on the website at the following link: Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics).
  • University of Edinburgh also require a research proposal that is feasible and in an area that we can supervise; information on our academic staff can be found on our website at the following link: Academic staff - Schol of Economics.
  • All decisions will be communicated by the end of March 2026.
