PhD Studentship: Interplay between Algorithms and Combinatorics at University of Sheffield 2025

The University of Sheffield is offering a fully funded PhD studentship under the supervision of Prof. Parinya Chalermsook. This research project explores the rich and long-standing interplay between algorithms and extremal combinatorics, aiming to make progress on classical computational problems with inherent combinatorial structures. Candidates will investigate connections such as forbidden submatrices, Ramsey theory, and algorithmic extremal combinatorics.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree with a minimum of 2:1 Honours, or a Master’s degree with Merit (in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field)
  • Strong mathematical or algorithmic background
  • IELTS 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in each component) if English is not your first language
