The Rhodes Scholarship is a fully-funded postgraduate award which enables talented young people from around the world to study full-time at the University of Oxford. The Rhodes Scholarship is merit-based, with the purpose of developing public-spirited leaders, and to promote international understanding and peace through an international community of Scholars. There are 3 Rhodes Scholarships available each year for West Africa, which includes Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, the island of Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, São Tomé and Principe and Togo.

Requirements
- Constituency: You must apply for the Rhodes Scholarship in the West Africa constituency.
- Nationality or Citizenship: You must be a citizen of one of the following countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, the island of Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, São Tomé and Principe and Togo.
- Education / Residency: You must have been a resident in one or more of the countries listed above for at least five of the last ten years.
- Age Criteria: You must meet one of the following:
- Standard Age: Be aged 18-24 on October 1, 2025 (born between October 2, 2000, and October 1, 2007).
- For Medical, Dental, Pharmaceutical, Law, and Engineering Students (allowing for internships): Be aged 18-25 on October 1, 2025 (born between October 2, 1999, and October 1, 2007).
- Older Candidates (completed first undergraduate degree later than usual): Be under the age of 27 on October 1, 2025 (born after October 1, 1998) AND have completed your first undergraduate degree on or after October 1, 2024.
- Academic Achievement:
- You must have completed an undergraduate degree (normally a Bachelor's degree) by the application deadline.
- Your academic background and grades must be a First Class Honours Degree or equivalent, meeting or exceeding the specific entry requirements of your chosen full-time course at the University of Oxford.
- For Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy: The highest classification your University awards (e.g., Distinction) would be considered equivalent to a First Class Honours Degree. Additionally, you must have achieved a distinction in at least three of these five subject areas: Medicine & surgery, Pathology, Pharmacology, Gynaecology, Paediatrics.
- Increased Chance of Admission: Candidates have a greater chance if they have an Honours degree (or have taken an Honours year) from a University outside their country, or if they have studied to Master's level within their country (with exceptions for Nigeria, Ghana, and some medical students).
- English Language Criteria: You must demonstrate a sufficiently high standard of English to meet the University of Oxford's English language proficiency requirements (at the Higher Level), or qualify for an English Language test waiver.
