UKRI AI for Healthcare CDT PhD at Imperial College London (October 2025 Entry)

Imperial College London invites applications for its UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare. This fully funded 4-year PhD program equips students to address pressing healthcare challenges using advanced AI techniques, including machine learning, natural language processing, and robotics. A new funded PhD project on AI for Clinical-Grade Mobile Mental Health Management is currently available for Spring/Summer 2025 start.

Benefits

Regular PhD Studentship

  • Full Tuition Fees (Home rate: £7,340/year in 2024–25)

  • Annual Stipend: £22,780 (UKRI London rate for 2025–26)

  • Research/conference support funding

  • Duration: 3–4 years

Clinical PhD Fellowship

  • Clinical salary support

  • Tuition fees (Home rate) for up to 3 years

  • Must be GMC-registered UK doctors in training (ST2–4 or GP Trainees within 12 months of CCT)

  • Must be eligible for OOPR (Out of Programme for Research)

Requirements

  • First Class (4-year) Undergraduate degree and Distinction Master’s (or equivalent)

  • Backgrounds accepted:

    • Computer Science

    • Engineering (Biomedical, Mechanical, Electrical)

    • Mathematics, Physics, Statistics

    • Biological Sciences, or Medicine

  • Core skills: Coding, Mathematics, Statistics

  • Desirable: Experience in ML, NLP, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Robotics, HCI, or Digital Health

  • ATAS clearance required

  • English proficiency at Imperial’s Standard Level

  • Clinical Fellows: Must be GMC-registered and eligible for clinical release

Selection Process

Selection criteria includes:

  • Academic merit and research potential
  • Interdisciplinary interest in AI and healthcare
  • Motivation and alignment with CDT’s mission
  • Quality of CV, personal statement, and academic performance
  • Interview and supervisor match process

A. CV (Include):

  • Nationality, residence history

  • All degrees with grades

  • Research experience, internships, awards

  • Employment history

  • Language fluency and accommodations if needed

B. Academic Transcripts

  • Official/unofficial transcripts (including current study with grades so far)

C. Personal Statement (1 page max):

  • Motivation for AI in healthcare

  • Your research interests

  • Why you chose this CDT

  • Mention if you’ve contacted a supervisor

D. References

  • Two academic referees (required before review begins)
