University of East London Postgraduate Scholarship for Asylum Seekers (September 2025 Entry)

The University of East London (UEL) is committed to supporting vulnerable individuals, including asylum seekers, in accessing higher education. In partnership with the Helena Kennedy Foundation, this scholarship offers full tuition fee support to eligible postgraduate students who are unable to access mainstream student funding.

Benefits

  • 100% tuition fee support for the duration of the postgraduate program
  • Support continues until the recipient is granted immigration status allowing access to Student Finance

Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be an asylum seeker or hold temporary immigration status related to an asylum claim
  • Have received a conditional or unconditional offer for a taught postgraduate course at UEL for 2025/26
  • Be unable to access Student Finance England
  • Be new applicants only (current students are not eligible)
  • Not require living cost support from the university
  • Submit biometric card (ARC) and Home Office letter via email to: [email protected]

Selection Process

Applicants are evaluated based on:

  • Clarity and ambition in future goals
  • Impact of personal and immigration-related barriers on education
  • Financial need and self-sufficiency
  • Quality and completeness of responses to the three key essay questions (see below)

Application Documents

  • ARC biometric card (asylum status proof)

  • Home Office immigration letter

  • Completed online application form, including:

    • Full name, contact details, date of birth

    • UEL Applicant Number (from course application)

    • UCAS Personal ID (if applicable)

    • Responses to the scholarship questions

Step 1: Apply to a taught postgraduate program at UEL
Step 2: Receive your UEL Applicant/Student Number
Step 3: Complete the SMART Asylum Seeker Postgraduate Scholarship Form
Step 4: Email your ARC card and Home Office letter to: [email protected]
Step 5: Submit before the deadline

Scholarship Questions (Required in Application Form):
Each has a 500-word / 2,500-character limit:

  • Future Goals – What are your ambitions, and how will the UEL Article 26 Scholarship help you achieve them?

  • Barriers to Education – How has your personal situation affected your education? Describe the challenges and how you’ve tried to overcome them.

  • Financial Background – Outline your current financial situation. How have you previously supported your education? Do you have any other plans for supporting yourself at university?
