University of Oxford Two Postdoctoral Research Fellow Positions in Sociology 2026

The Department of Sociology at the University of Oxford has announced applications for two Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PRF) positions, offering early-career researchers an opportunity to pursue independent scholarship at one of the world’s leading academic institutions.

The fellowships, which will commence in September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter, are available for up to four years and will run until 30 September 2030. One position is intended for a researcher with a primarily quantitative research focus, while the second position is aimed at a scholar with a primarily qualitative research background.

The appointments provide an opportunity for researchers to develop independent research agendas, contribute to Oxford’s vibrant intellectual community, and gain valuable teaching and academic leadership experience.

  • £49,119 to £58,265 per annum
  • In addition, a discretionary salary range may extend up to:

Requirements

Candidates will be judged against the following criteria, and should ensure that their covering letter explains in their own words how they meet them.

• Hold a PhD/DPhil in a relevant field.

• Ability to independently plan and manage a research project, including a research budget

• Publications in peer-reviewed journals appropriate to career stage.

• Experience of raising research funds through making grant applications

• Possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research projects and methodologies

• Willingness to contribute to the intellectual life of the Department.

 • Experience of teaching high-achieving students.
