The University of Portsmouth offers a fully funded three-year PhD opportunity focused on the project “From Sail to Steam, Carbon to Green: Empowering Port Communities in the Global South (Peru).” The project explores the historical and contemporary impact of maritime technological change on port communities, particularly in the transition from sail to steam and future decarbonization efforts. The PhD includes a visiting scholarship in Callao, Peru, and aims to incorporate local voices and knowledge into global maritime research.

Requirements

  • A good first degree (minimum upper second class) or a master’s degree in History or a relevant subject.
  • Fluent Spanish skills (speaking and reading).
  • Willingness to live and work in Portsmouth (UK) and Peru (Lima and Callao) for periods of time.
  • Preparedness to collaborate with community groups and stakeholders.

Applicants will be selected based on academic qualifications, language proficiency, and willingness to engage with community groups and co-produce research outputs.
