The Foundation Year Tuition Fee Waiver is a financial support initiative by the University of York designed to ease the financial burden for UK (home) undergraduate students entering the first year of a Foundation Year degree. Awarded based on household income as assessed by Student Finance, eligible students may receive a tuition fee waiver of up to £5,600. General Criteria
Be a UK (home) student (with 'Home' fee status).
Be enrolled in the first year of a Foundation Year degree at the University of York.
Have a means-tested household income as assessed by Student Finance.
Eligible Courses
You must have an offer for one of the following foundation year degrees:
BEng Electronic Engineering (with a foundation year)
BEng Music Technology Systems (with a foundation year)
BSc Physics (with a foundation year)
BEng Engineering (with a foundation year)
Household Income Bands
£25,000 or less → £5,600 tuition fee waiver
Over £25,000 → £3,000 tuition fee waiver
Important: To be considered, your Student Finance application must be fully means-tested, and you (and your parents/sponsors) must consent to share your financial information with the university.
You may also qualify for the York Bursary if your household income is £35,000 or less.
No separate application is needed—eligibility and award are determined automatically based on your Student Finance data:
Accept an offer on an eligible Foundation Year undergraduate program:
BEng Electronic Engineering (with Foundation Year)
BEng Music Technology Systems (with Foundation Year)
BSc Physics (with Foundation Year)
BEng Engineering (with Foundation Year)
Complete your Student Finance application (means-tested) before the first working day in October, providing accurate household income details.
Allow Student Finance to share your data with the University of York—if you or your sponsor opts out, we won’t be able to assess you.
Once your Student Finance record is in place, the university will automatically check your eligibility and apply the fee waiver accordingly.
