Newcastle University AHRC-funded PhD Studentship in Early Modern Studies 2024

Subscribe for Scholarship Alert.

Interested in early modern books, print culture and politics? This project investigates how the early modern English state used the book trade guild known as the Stationers’ Company to censor publications.

You will work with the Stationers’ Company’s extensive archive (in particular its business records) to explore how it recruited spies and censors and how it went about locating and shutting down forbidden printing. You will also consider the extent to which this involved state appropriation of the traditional regulatory function of the Company.

Relevant training in bibliography, palaeography, and relevant digital techniques will be provided. You will work alongside staff at the Stationers’ Company, but also with members of the Special Collections digital team at Newcastle University to develop relevant skills and expertise.
